Let’s give a big round of applause for another incredible year in music! It’s the perfect moment to reflect on our achievements and celebrate the incredible fans, talented artists, and everyone who joined us at our shows, making this year unforgettable.
Ancienne Belgique
Annual Report
Foreword
AB is steadily evolving into a 24/7 dynamic music hub.
Tom Bonte, General Director

Dear reader,
Here it is again, our annual report. Fully digital for the first time. It tells the story of an intense 2025, in which we were in full swing both in front of and behind the scenes.
On stage, it was a mouthwatering year. More than 400 artists from all walks of life made our collective musical hearts beat faster. For a glimpse of all these musical treats, a number of AB colleagues take you through their personal highlights in this report.
Alongside the regular programme of concerts, our project work also progressed at full speed. We built further on regulars like BRDCST, braindance_ and Rapsalon. With new initiatives like AB at Night, we are taking another step towards our transformation from concert hall to open music house.
Add to that our commitment to charity, our actions for students and people in poverty and deprivation and our efforts to make AB a safe and warm place for everyone, and you'll realise that once again in 2025, the AB crew did not sit still for a moment.
Behind the scenes, the year revolved for many around new infrastructure and future plans. During the summer, our locker area finally got a much-needed refresh. Commissioned by the Flemish government, the building in Steenstraat underwent a thorough renovation. At the same time, the non-profit organisation AB seized the opportunity to acquire a property adjacent to the Main Hall. In time, we aim to create meeting rooms and much-needed office space there. Thanks to our brand-new partnership with Brewery Haacht, we also concluded a long-term concession for the corner building next to our main entrance. A major renovation will follow in the coming year, with the goal of opening a new AB Café.
Alongside all these promising developments, however, a more challenging reality is unfolding. Our production and staffing costs are rising sharply, while some revenue streams (such as bar sales) are showing a significant downward trend. Then there is our broader context: AB is the music house of the Flemish community, and with pride and ambition we take on a wide range of roles and responsibilities in support of non-classical music—think talent development through residencies, accessibility initiatives for young people, opportunities for emerging artists, and more.
Many of the infrastructure expansions described above will serve these missions—but like any R&D department, they come at a cost. This stands in stark contrast to the ongoing monopolisation of the music market, where some are eager to reap the rewards of successful artists, yet all too often leave the sowing to others…
With some concern, but even greater ambition, we are heading into 2026!
On the stage
Which AB concerts truly stood out this past year?
Our team is happy to catch you up.

Front 242
24 January 2025
AB Main hall
I saw so many world-class concerts at AB this year: Vieze Meisje, Mermaid Chunky, The Dirty Three, and more. Singling out one concert really is an impossible task But if I have to, I'll choose the second show in the farewell series of Front 242, one of the most important Brussels groups of the last 50 years. We were able to enjoy the true masters of EBM one last time and that day there was nothing but love in the room.

Uwase
30 January 2025
AB Club
My favourite concert in AB was Uwase. Although the show took place very early in the year, this experience remained unsurpassed. I thought it was so wholesome and hung on her every word throughout the show. You really felt like a part of something bigger and that has stayed with me. Uwase is a real star and I can't wait to see her live again.

Thee Sacred Souls
25 February 2025
AB Main hall
As a programmer, it is often difficult to get completely into the vibe of the shows you have booked yourself, but Thee Sacred Souls managed to take me to a place free of care from start to finish. It's soul that really goes straight to your soul, especially live.

Joyce Jenny Loir
Concert Promoter

On 19 March, Mezerg almost literally blew the roof off the main hall. Between performance and technological experimentation, he built a live set overflowing with danceable beats, a good splash of funk and acid sounds that stayed with you all the way home. From the very first second, Mezerg had the 2,000-strong audience in the palm of his hand, without taking himself seriously for a single second.

AB Grote Zaal
Turnstile, douze points. The biggest band in hardcore played a show at AB like you only get a handful of each year. In under 60 minutes, they completely tore apart a sweltering, packed-to-the-brim Main hall. Rarely have I seen such a surging, boiling crowd at AB. A Little T.L.C. for you and me!

BHM x AB
B(l)ack to Our Roots
AB has collaborated with several editions of Black History Month Belgium to address themes of heritage, identity, diversity and creativity from a musical perspective. In 2025, this resulted in four events: from talks and workshops to concerts and club nights.
Selene Alexa gave a keynote on the importance of authentic identity as a black artist in Belgium, which was followed by a panel discussion on how to turn that identity into a meaningful public persona. Monique Mbeka Phoba curated traditional and modern Congolese on our stage with Rumba Divas. Jabanè Sessions provided a dance party on that same stage after a song-writing workshop.
Archiving is a primary goal among Black History Month organisations worldwide. The aim is to immortalise (often oral) histories and culture as they unfold. With this mission in mind, BHM Belgium chose the theme 'B(l)ack to Our Roots for the seventh edition of its festival.

Performing arts at AB
It seems like a surprising combination: AB and performing arts. And yet in the late 1980s, AB co-produced the groundbreaking dance performance What The Body Does Not Remember by Wim Vandekeybus. With Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, we brought Rosas in for the first time with the acclaimed Exit Above, featuring (AB-faithful) Meskerem Mees. We also presented the final performance of Voetvolk's Into The Open, which was shaped partly at AB during the Covid-19 pandemic.

4 April → 6 April
BRDCST
BRDCST has already created some waves in the US and UK in the recent past. For instance, the respected Crack Magazine had this to say in 2025: ‘BRDCST once again delivered an impressive and kaleidoscopic line-up for its 2025 edition.’ This was largely thanks to our guest curators: Swedish Anna Von Hausswolff, Zambian-Canadian Backxwash and American Colin Stetson.
External venues and partners such as the Beursschouwburg art centre (for BRDCST BY NGHT), the Palace arthouse cinema (for our live film soundtracks) and the Rijke Klarenkerk Catholic church (for intimate concerts) completed BRDCST. Our coups de cœur of 2025: Blackhaine, FUJI||||||||||TA, YHWH Nailgun, SML, Keeley Forsyth and the curious hockets by Meara O'Reilly.
Finally, a CRACK Magazine ode to the public: ‘BRDCST stands out thanks to the breadth of its programming and the curiosity of its audience - one of the most genuinely open-minded around.’

16 May
OUTRAGEOUS
DYKONIC
On the eve of Brussels Pride and following the first dyke* march in Brussels, AB presented OUTRAGEOUS for the fourth time, an annual night dedicated to bold music, pride and radical visibility. This is more than just a party. OUTRAGEOUS has quickly become a space for protest, joy and collective celebration. In 2025, the event was all about dykes. In collaboration with the MISSFITTE collective, a line-up full of dancers and music by Planningtorock, SHYBOI, Maara, JeanneTO and others was put together.

25 August → 29 August
Boterhammen
in het Park, Feeërieën
& Bar Chaud
At the end of August, as is our annual custom, the entire AB crew (and tonnes of equipment) set off for a week at Royal Park (Warandepark) for our summer festivals Boterhammen in het Park, Feeërieën and Bar Chaud. The 35th (!) edition of Boterhammen in het Park was once again a hit. A mix of established names and new voices in Dutch-language music filled the gazebo. There was laughter and crying, there was sunshine and rain, and there was delicious feasting to the sound of De Toegift, Madou, Simon, Emma Bale, LUNA, MAKSIM, Sophie Straat, Prins S. en De Geit, Kaat Van Stralen and Guido Belcanto.
In the evening, we then again celebrated our annual Feeërieën. In line with tradition, we charted contemporary and diverse musical quirkiness. De Mannenbroeders, Merope, Nusantara Beat, ØXN, Elijah Minnelli, Fulu Miziki, Sorvina, M I M I, James Massiah & Lord Tusk and others created a well-filled bill brimming with wonder and boundless, unboundaried encounters.
Bar Chaud was open to festival goers throughout: it was the place to be for discovery, play, fun, free dance workshops, skate classes, jams and battles. Celenges, TRANEN, The Kingz, no sugar and others provided a musical note here. Together with FRONTAL, we organised a showcase brimming with Dutch-speaking rap talent, and from this we chose the opening act for Rapsalon 2025. Together with Timiss, BX'elles and BRUZZ, we transformed Bar Chaud into the hottest stage of the summer.

KETCLUB
In 2025, for the third year in a row, KETCLUB continued to develop in earnest: full-fledged concerts on a children's scale. Chibi Ichigo, Borokov Borokov, Charlotte Adigéry & Bolis Pupul, Lefto Early Bird & Fatoosan, Yevgueni, Mad9 and others served up a good splash of rock and roll for the whole family. They played a slightly shorter set each time, lowering the volume for sensitive children's ears.
In terms of content, the shows were changed as little as possible. So more than 1,000 children enjoyed a unique first concert experience. On Sunday, 18 May, AB organised a special edition of KETCLUB in collaboration with Start Making Sense and PILAR in aid of HOPE foundation, an organisation that supports children in Gaza. No less than €11,424 was collected in the process.

18 October
Rapsalon
On 18 October, AB once again brought together the cream of Dutch-language hip-hop at a unique one-day festival. Rapsalon was just the place to immerse yourself in the raw and authentic world of hip-hop from the Low Countries. From old school vibes to the latest tracks, from established artists to budding talent. Jazz Brak, Sticks, Lil Alia & Ysmé, Milolaathetlukken, Fabs.075, Chinoir and Yannish were on the bill for this second edition.
In front of AB, Brussels collective Moedertaal hosted a cypher brimming with young talent. We got punchlines, bars and a good dose of energy from the likes of Ax, Broco, Carpi, Coi, The Twins, Doeter, Frozzze, Harmo, Incoggio, Jelle, Roy Van Loock, Sictisu, Winter, and others.

19 December
braindance_2025
2025 saw the sixth edition of our nightlife and electronics concept, braindance_. Once again, we filled the AB complex to the brim with ravers from all over the country. HAAi, Jennifur, Interplanetary Criminal, Juicy Romance, Sim0ne, Swimming Paul, Surusinghe, VAAGUE and Catalina turned AB into a nightclub.

AB at Night
AB kicked off 2025 with another step in its transformation from concert hall to open music house. With AB at Night, we are fully committed to programming outside the usual concert hours. Every month, we gave the keys to AB Club to a Brussels nightlife collective. Gloom Club, Female Boyfriends, HE4RTBROKEN, Jabanè Sessions, 3ave, Nebula and 96 were among those who curated inclusive club nights into the early hours.
On 13 September, AB at Night toured the centre of Brussels with AB at Night Street Club. AB further highlighted its nighttime programme during free open-air DJ pop-ups at Salon Vega, KFK Hope and Chez Lutgarde.

ABXL
Brussels in AB. In what ways is the city engraved in our DNA?
AB wants to give young Brussels talent every opportunity.

1 November
Big in BXL
BIG in BXL is the multidisciplinary project of JES Brussels. Through this project, the organisation aims to provide young people in Brussels with an opportunity to develop their artistic vision and showcase their work to a wide audience. During a summer residency at Zinnema, Brussels artists immersed themselves in workshops and exchanges, and worked on their performances, developing strong musical and human connections.
This led to the inspiring BIG in BXL showcase: a great night at AB Club, with the newest talent from the Brussels scene in the line-up, including Noah Gossiaux, Divee, Altair, Linliya, LUCASZ, Maya Teklal and 133midoriya.

Youth L’AB
Youth L'AB has been offering a group of multi-talented young people in Brussels the chance to immerse themselves in the activities of AB since 2022. The main requirement is a musical Brussels heart in the right place.
Along the way, young people are given carte blanche to get creative with the tools provided by AB. In 2025, this led to the organisation of Lullaby: a unique musical night that took the audience through a Brussels dream world, with concerts by Nuna, Lovelace, Gaiko, Maxe Hiro and Bo Jane.
Once again this year, Youth L'AB joined forces with Brussels Brost and Stoemp! to curate its own stage at the annual student festival in September. Young talents ROCA, Celenges, PAAK, Chloe Catara, DracoBoy and Susobrino performed in Reset's beautifully preserved auditorium.
AB itself again learnt a lot from this creative, bubbling experiment. Working with these enthusiastic Gen Z-ers provides a critical perspective on our day-to-day activities. Youth L'AB is broadening the horizons at AB, bringing a welcome breath of fresh air.

AB Volta
Meanwhile, the number of Volta residents who found their way from the Brussels music centre to AB stages is growing. Within this collaboration, AB's team supports some of the residents, especially in areas that are difficult to cover in Volta's regular activities. Think production assistance for a fully-fledged club show, help with shooting a music video or live stream, support for the release of a debut album, etc.
In 2025, this process culminated in wonderful AB Club showcases by Uwase, Niels Orens and Bianca Steck.
‘We believe the role Volta plays, the bridges we are building, the “grassroots” dynamic of the project, are crucial in today's music landscape, where opportunities to make music professionally are under social and economic pressure.
We see it as our mission to support the vulnerable position of emerging musicians. This valuable collaboration with Ancienne Belgique allows the talent we support together to resonate supra-locally.’
Arne Huysmans

11 July
Brussel Danst
“Vlaanderen feest en Brussel danst!” For the fifth year in a row, the Brussels Danst Dance Battles descended on the main hall on the Flemish holiday. As usual, AB organised the event in partnership with Timiss, a grassroots organisation working for and with the street community, and Muntpunt, with the support of Lotto players.
The central theme in 2025 was “groove”. Groove is more than a movement. It is an attitude, a rhythm, a way to connect, resist and celebrate together. Throughout the day, the stage was bursting with energy, with dancers from home and abroad challenging one another. They were galvanised by an enthusiastic audience, after which a professional jury chose which young dance phenomenon took first place in the hip-hop, house and krump categories.

Student discount
Since 2024, students have enjoyed a 20% discount on AB concert tickets when they create a student account and present a valid student ID card. 10,000 students used the student discount in 2025. Incidentally, about three-quarters of them ordered tickets at AB for the first time. This is how we are preparing the next generation of AB-ers!
‘We know how important it is for students to connect through music, and we hope this discount removes a barrier for those who might not otherwise be able to attend concerts.’

Reflection
Which topics give us food for thought?
How does AB look at herself and the world she lives in?

KU Leuven x AB Talks
Culture and music are good indicators of what is going on in society. With the KU Leuven x AB Talks, we aim to join the university in discussing social issues through a musical lens. A panel of academics, artists and/or music professionals share insights on a problem statement and suggest possible solutions. This takes place before an in-person and online audience.
So on 29 April, AB Club filled up for the KU Leuven x AB Talk: How is Spotify changing the way we experience music, including Liz Pelly, author of Mood Machine: The Rise of Spotify and the Costs of the Perfect Playlist. The panel discussed the dangers of streaming giants' ever-increasing influence and commercial choices.

8 November
AB x DS Podcastfestival
On Friday, 7 and Saturday, 8 November, thousands of podcast fans listened to De Standaard's podcast festival for the fourth time. De Grote Post cultural centre hosted a diverse mix of podcast makers from home and abroad who offered the perfect sample of podcasts anno 2025 with live recordings, master classes, keynotes, listening sessions and talks. AB was also present for the second year in a row. We hosted and curated a music podcast stage full of (international) musical guests and high-profile topics in the Panorama room.
For instance, we invited Pien Lefranc with her podcast Crazy World. In an exclusive live recording, Zwangere Guy came to speak candidly about mental health and the importance of therapy in the music industry. Sam Tyler, who already nabbed the Arts & Culture Podcast of 2025 award at the British Podcast Awards with Sonic Fields, went to Ostend to talk to Eppo Janssen and Sofie Engelen about the differences between the festival landscape in Belgium and the UK. Also featured were the gentlemen from Koolcast, who explained the relationship between sport and music, Rik De Bruycker, who interacted with New York audio maker Ngofeen Mputubwele about Fela Kuti, and finally Eefje De Visser, who shared some great cultural tips in Bar Miroir.

Pommelien Thijs, Recupel and AB
On Earth Day (22 April), AB joined forces with Recupel and Pommelien Thijs with one clear mission: to give a second life to as many old mobile phones as possible to save the environment. In exchange for three old devices, fans had a chance to win a ticket to Pommelien's exclusive end-of-summer show at AB on 28 September, or fun goodies at her merch pop-up.
The result? No fewer than 8,900 old mobile phones were collected thanks to thousands of enthusiastic Pommelien fans. The devices - more than 98% (!) recyclable - were recycled in an environmentally friendly and safe way by Recupel. Urban mining allows us to make a huge difference with very little effort!

Bolt becomes structural partner
AB is all about energy: the energy on stage, the atmosphere in the room, the shared moments between artists and audience. But behind the scenes, another kind of energy plays a big role: the one that literally runs everything. We owe it to Bolt, the Brussels-based renewable energy platform. In 2025, AB and Bolt entered into a structural partnership, based on a shared vision for a future that is fairer and greener.
AB and Bolt had joined forces before: in March 2023, we launched a successful crowdfunding campaign to install solar panels on AB's roof. And during Boterhammen in het Park, Feeërieën and Bar Chaud, a large Bolt solar panel installation at the entrance provided green electricity. Together, we are planning many more initiatives that will make our concert hall, the music industry and the impact of our audiences more sustainable.

Haacht as a sustainable beer partner
AB believes in strong partnerships that are in line with its values. That is why we have had a new, local partner at the bar since early 2025: Brouwerij Haacht, a 100% Belgian and independent family brewery. Thanks to their SUPER 8 range, we offer a completely new beer experience that has something to suit everyone's taste: from the refreshing SUPER 8 Pils and SUPER 8 Blanche to the SUPER 8 Flandrien 0.0, for those who prefer alcohol-free drinks. The Ommegang Tripel (in honour of the Brussels Ommegang) and the fruity Mystic Krieken are also on the menu.

Charities and Solidarity Ticket
AB has been committed for years to charities that make a difference. In June 2025, together with our cyclists, we raised money for Kom Op Tegen Kanker for the 16th time. After the six-month campaign, the total stood at €135,000 this year. In the second half of the year, we also collected a record €75,000 for our Solidarity Ticket, which offers free or cheaper tickets to people in poverty and deprivation. To this end, we actively cooperate with UiTPAS, Paspartoe and Article 27.
Around the end-of-year period, we teamed up with HOBO to cook another New Year's Eve meal for 250 homeless people. In doing so, we were able to transfer €33,230 to HOBO, a sum that will be used for investments in computers, among other things.
We also showed our best side in the kitchen again: we cooked the world's best pasta sauce for the big Brussels Helps Spaghetti Night. Finally, we organised a family-friendly concert afternoon in the main hall with PILAR and Start Making Sense in aid of the HOPE Foundation. Show Up For Humanity, a festival of concerned citizens, was also able to rely on our wide-ranging support.

Integrity policy
In 2025, a renewed integrity policy ranked high on the agenda. Our ambition to tolerate no form of inappropriate behavior, discrimination, abuse of power or violence led to a number of concrete actions. The “AB loves you” awareness campaign, for example, was widely rolled out across all our communication channels. As a result, more and more visitors are aware of how to make their concert experience as safe and enjoyable as possible, and of what an AB staff member can do for them if something does go wrong.
Informing and training employees, students, freelancers and volunteers in dealing with inappropriate behavior also remained an absolute priority. AB loves you!
Volunteers
In 2024, the AB family was expanded to include a group of around 200 motivated AB volunteers. You can find them behind the bar, checking tickets, or acting as hosts during events or as stewards at AB's festivals. Under the guidance of colleagues Ruth and Orane, they quickly grew into a close-knit team representing AB with obvious enthusiasm. In 2025 once again, our volunteers were indispensable for our centre's day-to-day activities.
'Meeting new people with the diversity among the volunteers is very enriching. Every time I come to AB, it's like reuniting with family.’

Laëtitia
AB-volunteer
and photography student
‘It's a pleasure meeting so many different individuals that I would not have an opportunity to meet in my daily life. Being a “foreigner” living in a foreign country, but not feeling like one, is the true beauty of Brussels. I am so happy that AB cherishes this diversity in so many ways.’

Marko
AB-volunteer
and EU project officer
‘The spontaneous and cheerful conversations with the many concertgoers energise me every time. My volunteer work in AB gives me the chance to get to know new people and a lot of music at the same time. A real win-win!’

Thibault
AB volunteer
and chemistry assistant at VUB

New lockers
Thanks to the support of the Flemish Government's Department of Culture, Youth and Media and Re=bel by Belfius, we were finally able to renovate our locker room in 2025. The old lockers were reused for our job students and volunteers.
They made way for new, user-friendly lockers. The space itself also received an upgrade: two large walls were taken care of by rising artist Elize Sokolova. She emerged as the winner of the open call we launched together with Re=bel by Belfius.

Steenstraat renovations
Behind the scenes, in 2025 we didn’t just build figuratively, but quite literally continued shaping the future of our music venue. Commissioned by the Flemish Government, the construction wing on Steenstraat underwent a complete renovation. At the same time, alongside the works by main contractor Denys, our lighting, sound, IT, and infrastructure teams delivered a state-of-the-art audiovisual setup for the new spaces. And the result? It packs a punch.
In 2026, we will open a brand-new venue with retractable seating, a rooftop bar for special events, a brand-new large-scale kitchen, and a fully equipped space where our community work can grow even stronger.
With ABtv, we have had an online presentation venue for 19 years that offers a lot of content in real time and on demand, for an impressively large audience from home and abroad. With an average of almost 20,000 viewers a day, ABtv is AB's digital sign. It takes our activities to every corner of the planet. Quite literally. After all, ABtv had viewers in every country in the world in 2025.
From 2025, we are joining forces with Proximus Showcase to bring highly reviewed concerts all the way to your living room under the name “Live at AB”. High-end video captures of established and new Belgian artists can now also be viewed via Pickx.

Some more figures from 2025:

Ancienne Belgique is the proud founder and coordinator of Liveurope, a platform of iconic venues working together to support the next generation of European talent.
In 2025, Liveurope embarked on its fourth consecutive Creative Europe grant, introducing new priorities and working methods while building on a proven, successful model that gives promising artists across Europe a stage. In the context of rising costs and shifting audience habits, Liveurope continues to help venues keep their stages open so new voices continue to be seen, heard and celebrated.
In 2025 alone, the platform supported 720 concerts with emerging European artists from 36 countries. This contributes to more than 5,700 supported shows featuring artists from 43 countries since 2014.
Zooming in on AB & Belgian artists
Thanks to Liveurope support, AB presented 37 promising European artists from 11 countries, including Boko Yout (SE), Froukje (NL), Kosmonauci (PL), Yeli Yeli (ES), and Nina Garcia (FR).
In turn, 38 new Belgian acts performed in 12 internationally renowned venues, such as Iliona, MAKSIM, Elias, Ramkot, Youniss, and Porcelain Id.
Celebrating Europe at EUphoria
In May, AB hosted the 11th edition of its annual Europe Day celebration, newly renamed EUphoria. The event brought together representatives from EU institutions and cultural professionals to discuss the future of European music policy under the next EU budget, followed by an evening of musical discoveries showcasing promising artists from across the continent.
